Do you know the Unique story behind the establishment of Tata Cancer Hospital?

The Tata cancer hospital is situated in Parel, Mumbai. Also popularly known as The Tata Memorial Hospital. It is a cancer specialist hospital. The hospital is listed as one of the most advanced cancer treatment centres in India.

The picture you see below is of Madam Meharabai Tata. Wife of Dorabaji Tata(son of Jamshedji Tata)

She can be clearly seen wearing a giant size Diamond pendant & shockingly it was double the size of Kohinoor (one of the largest cut diamonds in the world). The pendant was a token of gift from her husband, Dorabaji Tata in the year 1900. The story behind the establishment of Tata Cancer Hospital begins from the pendent.

In 1921, Dorabaji Tata took a loan from the bank against that giant pendant, so as to save tata steel from the financial crisis.
Madam Meherabai Tata, used to wear sari & played tennis. She also participated in mixed double even in Paris Olympics 1924.

But sadly, she died in 1931 at a very young age due to Leukemia also called blood cancer.
And later after her death, her husband Dorabaji Tata sold all her ornaments and jewellery to raise funds for a Cancer Treatment Centre. This is how Tata Cancer Hospital was founded.
